“Yeh hai Mumbai. Yahan time ka matlab hai paisa. Mujhe Tees Minute ki journey teen minute me puri karni hai”

This is Mumbai.  Time is Money here. I want to reduce my thirty minutes journey to three minutes.

Said Jai Mittal in the movieTaxi No 9211.

Well, it’s now a reality in Mumbai. The 60  minutes drive time is reduced to a quick  and cool 7 minutes  over the 5.6 km Sea Link which connects Bandra and Worli, over the sea.

To save the travel time of suburban commuters, it took a cool Rs. 1600 crore ($ 400 Million approx) of booty and 10 engineering years.

Only half (4 lanes) the width of the  bridge is open, the other half would be completed soon. Presently the 4 lane link is temporarily divided into 2 x2  for up and down traffic.

I have uploaded a video of a to and fro drive over the much awaited Bandra -Worli Sea Link on Saturday, 25 July 09. Though the date 25 July has not exactly been very good for Mumbai, in the last few years, but this particular Saturday was very pleasant. It was partly sunny afternoon, no rains at all. The traffic was negligible few and the drive, super smooth. I have added the music of Bappi Lahiri ( Taxi No 9211) and Vishal Bharadwaj ( Kaaminey) for that unique Mumbai Flavour.
Enjoy and do leave a comment !

Check the video and find out how cool is the bridge 🙂

Btw, wiki says– The bridge weighs 670,000 tons, which is equivalent to 50,000 African elephants. I wonder how many ~uhs~ is that 🙂

Took a drive on it last week. Its great! The sky was overcast for me and it was raining…
~uh~: That must be a different feeling. I want to take a night drive as well.

Really …an achievment to be proud of … I saw the inaugaration report on Times Now and could not quite understand the exact length etc … was trying to match it to the experience of Vidysagar Setu … (I have not been to Mumbai except for in between flight stops) … thanks for sharing this with us … with such creative inputs ….btw ….did you mean Sunday the 26th or Saturday the 25th??….great pictures and video !!
~uh~: The comparison with V Setu automatically comes for us Bongs. Though both are principally cable stayed, BWSL is flat and much longer with curves et al. When the other lane opens the 8 lane bridge would be wider than V setu as well.
It should have been Sat 25th. The date changed while uploading and i missed it 😦
Thanks for pointing it out
It will remain as a blooper in the video forever on Youtube 🙂

Looks very nice from distance, but heard that the roads already have developed pot holes and the works!

News flash!
~uh~: I did not face any potholes, but I won’t be surpised if there were any !

~uh~: many 🙂

i just saw this vid on your youtube site today ~uh~….that’s is a beautiful piece of architecture but a 60min drive to a 7 minute?? that’s incredible and good for you! beautiful flick btw.
~uh~: Thanks, i wish you could understand the first song lyric which portrays the true essence of Mumbai 🙂

yes, me too..

Good. Bombay desperately needs some good infrastructure.
~uh~: And multiple alternative SBDs too.

howz the traffic when it lands at worli sea face….i saw that it lands at a right angle…so is there a signal there to join the left lane? (youtube banned at work, so couldnt see the video)

Hope they build the next phase to Haji Ali soon…dunno what they r waiting for…

btw, the drive must be cool….also the skyline 😀
~uh~: I understand Worli connector is a bottleneck at weekdays because of the right angle, though Saturday was free. There’s a compulsory left and U turn for all incoming traffic during peak hours.
before the Versova-Bandra link, they want to do the controversial Pedar Rd flyover.
Do check the video later.

~uh~: It’s a pride 🙂

9. nursemyra - Wednesday, 29 July, 2009

reducing a 60 minute drive to 7? that’s amazing. what a fabulous looking bridge
~uh~: Yeah, it bypasses at least 12 traffic signals on the inland route

An Engineering marvel indeed. .. First of it’s kind in India right ??

~uh~: Yeah, First and longest sea-bridge in India. Though the cable-stayed technology has been used first in 2nd Hoogly bridge ( Vidyasagar Setu) in Kolkata.

Sorry to rain on Mumbai’s parade, but man’s need (greed) for roads and development will never be satisfied, especially in grossly overpopulated countries like ours. But the environment, which we depend upon for our lives and which we merrily sweep under the carpet whenever it suit us, will give way sooner or later. We are already facing the first effects with falling ground water levels.
While crowing over our justly remarkable engineering feats, a word of caution, give yourself 2 years, just 2 and the traffic will increase exponentially to create traffic jams on this very Bandra Worli sea link that everyone is so deliriously happy about. I’ve seen it happen in Delhi.
